Summer Adventures Program
Summer 2010
FETCh and Hawaii 4-H offer families a Summer Adventures Program, five
afternoons a week (1:00pm - 5:30pm) for five weeks from June 1st, 2010
through July 2, 2010.
Fee
The program provides 23 hours of
instruction per week to each child as
well as 3 hours of parenting ed and guided family activities.
Cost is $120 a week per child or $600 for the
5-week program, paid in advance.
Hawaii 4-H
provides comprehensive insurance for all participants, included in the
cost.
Program Information
In Summer
Adventures Camp, children work in stable learning groups of 9
children with 2-3 counselors each. Each
group meets in its own “clubhouse” on the
1)
horseback riding, horse care and pre-vet sciences
2)
hydroponics, aquaponics and solar energy
3)
landscape gardening and vermiculture
4)
woodworking, masonry and bike repair
5)
visual arts, including photography
6)
music performance: guitar or ukulele
7)
health, nutrition and fitness (biking and boxing)
8)
communication, group belonging & leadership
On Wednesday Afternoons:
Children are transported to Koko Crater
Stables for outdoor education in
horsemanship, horse care and pre-vet animal sciences. They
are returned to UHM campus for a 5:30pm pickup by parents.
Family
activities are required as an essential component of this
program. On Fridays, from 5:30, licensed
counselors work with families to optimize harmony and cooperation. They guide parents and children in activities
geared toward completing 4-H hands-on projects.
Youth prepare and serve a buffet dinner.
Skilled professionals:
1) teach proven methods of parenting;
2) conduct
open-forum counseling to demonstrate application of these methods; and
3) offer
up to 6 individual consultations to families at no additional charge. A
Family
Camping experience may be organized if families are interested.
Youth and families will display posters, products
or demonstrations of their accomplishments at a Pa’ina ceremony during
the last
session.
Summer Adventures offers a range of
skill-building experiences in one
cohesive program. University trained instructors and
counselors follow university-developed curricula in plant and animal
sciences
and the arts. Children learn leading
edge skills, in small groups and among familiar counselors and peers.
Families learn new ways to work
together. The Summer Adventures services have proven to
enhance youth initiative and strengthen families.
