Summer Adventures Program

Summer 2010

FETCh and Hawaii 4-H offer families a Summer Adventures Program, five afternoons a week (1:00pm - 5:30pm) for five weeks from June 1st, 2010 through July 2, 2010.

Fee

The program provides 23 hours of instruction per week to each child as well as 3 hours of parenting ed and guided family activities.
Cost is $120 a week per child or $600 for the 5-week program, paid in advance.

Hawaii 4-H provides comprehensive insurance for all participants, included in the cost.

Program Information

In Summer Adventures Camp, children work in stable learning groups of 9 children with 2-3 counselors each.  Each group meets in its own “clubhouse” on the University of Hawaii at Manoa campus.  There is ample open outdoor space for active play.  Older children bike with their counselors on campus to the Energy House, to participate in sustainability projects.  Youth become familiar with campus life while they engage in hands-on learning  at their age level.  Each child receives small group instruction in 8 areas, weekly:

1)      horseback riding, horse care and pre-vet sciences

2)      hydroponics, aquaponics and solar energy

3)      landscape gardening and vermiculture

4)      woodworking, masonry and bike repair

5)      visual arts, including photography

6)      music performance: guitar or ukulele

7)      health, nutrition and fitness (biking and boxing)

8)      communication, group belonging & leadership

On Wednesday Afternoons:

Children are transported to Koko Crater Stables for outdoor education in horsemanship, horse care and pre-vet animal sciences. They are returned to UHM campus for a 5:30pm pickup by parents.

Family activities are required as an essential component of this program.  On Fridays, from 5:30, licensed counselors work with families to optimize harmony and cooperation.  They guide parents and children in activities geared toward completing 4-H hands-on projects.  Youth prepare and serve a buffet dinner.  Skilled professionals:

1) teach proven methods of parenting;
2) conduct open-forum counseling to demonstrate application of these methods; and
3) offer up to 6 individual consultations to families at no additional charge. A Family Camping experience may be organized if families are interested.

Youth and families will display posters, products or demonstrations of their accomplishments at a Pa’ina ceremony during the last session.

Summer Adventures offers a range of skill-building experiences in one cohesive program.  University trained instructors and counselors follow university-developed curricula in plant and animal sciences and the arts.  Children learn leading edge skills, in small groups and among familiar counselors and peers.  Families learn new ways to work together.  The Summer Adventures services have proven to enhance youth initiative and strengthen families.
